Established in April 1995, the School of Business Administration now has two departments: the Management Department on Huadong Campus and the Economic Management Department on Beijing Campus. Both departments offer 3 bachelor programs and two master programs. And the School plans to offer five more undergraduate programs, two more graduate programs and one Ph.D. program in near future.
The Economic Management Department developed from the Industrial Economics Teaching and Research Section, which was founded in the former Beijing Petroleum Institute (BPI) in 1954. In 1956, the Industrial Economics Teaching and Research Section developed into the Industrial Economics Department and began to enroll undergraduate students. Then the Department became a component of the Petroleum Development Department as the Industrial Economics Teaching and researching Section.
In 1979, Huadong Petroleum College resumed the enrollment of students majoring in the industrial economics, and established the Department of Management Engineering. From 1983, the new department began to offer master programs. In 1985, the Petroleum Economics Research Group was established in its Beijing Graduate School, offering master programs. In 1989, University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB) established the Economic Management Department and began to enroll undergraduate students majoring in Industrial Foreign Trade. In 1992 the department began to offer the undergraduate program in Marketing and in 1994 another undergraduate program in Accountancy. The year 1995 saw the establishment of the School of Business Administration.
After years of development, the department has obtained great achievements in economic management research. In the last five years, they accomplished more than 40 research projects, including 11 state or ministry key projects. The scientific research in the department involves medium or micro developing strategies, project planning, economic evaluation, management design and diagnosis, energy economy, system engineering, petroleum business, and financing and managing behavior in enterprises.
By now 177 students have been granted bachelor degrees and 90 students master degrees by the department. At present the department has 493 undergraduate students, 61 graduate students, and 124 on-job students pursuing master degree.
The department is very active in international cooperation. It had visiting scholars from the US (University of Nebraska, University of Alaska, Virginian University, and San Jose State University), Canada (University of Calgary) and Russia to lecture here. In 1996 it successfully organized the first CNPC program in preparing multi-national business managers in cooperation with A&M University in Texas, U.S.A and an international symposium on petroleum economic management.
On the basis of the present three undergraduate programs, the department is planning to offer three more undergraduate programs in economic laws, business English, and management information system. As to the graduate programs, we are planning to hold two more in MBA and accountancy beside the management engineering program. Now the department is expecting to offer Ph.D. program in near future.
