The department grew out of the former Department of Basic Sciences in 2000.The courses offered by the department are taken by all the students of every other department in the university. The department has two teaching and research sections: Mathematics and Physics.
The department has a faculty of 25,including 1 professor, 10 associate professors, 1 senior engineer of physics, 5 lecturers, engineers and 4 assistant lecturers. The department staff published 12 papers in 2000 and 16 in 2001.The department offers 1 M. Sc. program: Radio physics. By now 14 students have got master's degrees. Now the department is planning to offer the program to undergraduates and another graduate program in Mathematics in the near future.
